For those who are interested, I tracked down one of the two book reviews that I mentioned in the blog. The book on genetic memory (or, more correctly, adaptive evolution) was called The Facts of Life: Shattering the Myth of Darwinism by Richard Milton. I didn't read the book, only the review. Still can't find the other one.
I also found the original symopsis I mentioned. Longer and more detailed than I remembered and with some significant differences (such as the Librarian murdering the other monks by placing venomous insects in the books!). I might get around to posting it if there's any real interest.
